The OIE is renovating its training format: Regional webinar on “Maintenance of officially recognised disease status”

Header

In the implementation of its capacity building programme, the OIE provided a training to participants from Veterinary Services of 35 OIE Member countries in Europe having at least one disease status officially recognized by the OIE. The objective: to improve the understanding of the OIE standards and procedures related to maintenance of officially recognised disease status. A similar training had been provided to 19 countries of Eastern Europe in 2019 in Kazakhstan, focusing on official status recognition and endorsement of official control programmes.

The webinar took the opportunity to introduce the participants to the newly launched OIE online training portal.

A new training format, adapted to an unpredictable situation

Due to COVID-19 situation, the training, initially planned for April 2020 in Brussels, was reorganised and packaged into three modules. Two weeks prior to the webinar, the participants acquainted themselves with the resource material on the OIE online training portal. This pre-training allowed them to fully benefit from the online seminar, held on September 17th.The third module is planned as a face to face workshop to complete the training with practical application of the acquired knowledge.

Official procedure, a tutorial to guide countries on how to better prepare the annual reconfirmations

With a focus on Foot and Mouth Disease and through specific examples, the online seminar provided the participants with information on the OIE requirements for the maintenance of this status. A presentation from European Commission’s DG SANTE provided the participants with information on European Union’s disease control measures within the framework of the animal health law.

The OIE standard operating procedures guiding the OIE Members on the process for the reconfirmation of officially recognised disease status and the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code surveillance requirements to maintain their status were presented. The online seminar focused on the information and supporting documented evidence that are required to be collected, compiled and submitted by Members in order to show compliance with the OIE standards for the maintenance of their officially recognised status.

Participants will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge in the future submissions of their annual reconfirmations for their disease free status.

A follow up workshop will be conducted in 2021.
